The accuracy of the design could only really be confirmed during installation. If something did not line up, the piece had to go back to the shop. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Today, stone and quartz countertop design follows a very different workflow<\/strong>. Countertop templating is no longer a manual process but a digital one; the countertop geometry becomes a parametric model; and countertop seams, edge profiles, and cutouts are defined before the slab ever reaches the CNC machine. Traditionally, fabricators reproduced the actual countertop shape\u2014including walls that were not perfectly square\u2014using <strong>cardboard, wood strips, or hardboard templates<\/strong>. The stone fabricator then relied on that physical template to cut the slab.  <\/p>\n<p>The method worked, but it had two major limitations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the <strong>physical template<\/strong> was bulky, fragile, and difficult to transport;<\/li>\n<li>transferring the template into a drawing always required some degree of <strong>manual reinterpretation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today, <strong>countertop templating is increasingly performed using<\/strong><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/08cCNarW4QI\">digital templating systems<\/a><\/strong>, such as laser templaters and photogrammetry systems. These tools generate a digital file containing the measured points in real time.<br\/>Within minutes,<strong> the technician can capture the countertop perimeter<\/strong>, actual wall angles, heights, and the exact location of sinks and cooktops. The data can then be sent directly to the engineering or CAD department without an intermediate manual drawing step. <\/p>\n<p>The biggest advantage, however, is not simply the accuracy of the measuring device. It is the fact that <strong>the data captured in the field is the same data used to generate the countertop design<\/strong>. This <strong>makes the visual result more predictable, but removes some of the flexibility fabricators traditionally have with natural stone<\/strong>. With marble, for example, a layout can sometimes be shifted or rotated to work around a particular area of the slab. With a more uniform quartz surface, <strong>there is less opportunity to hide a design or fabrication error through slab positioning<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Quartz slabs can be expensive<\/strong>, in many cases costing more than a number of natural stone options.<\/li>\n<li>Corners with radii that are too tight, sharp inside corners around cutouts, or an incorrect machining sequence may create <strong>stress concentrations and microcracks in a quartz slab<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With these materials, design is therefore no longer just a preliminary step.
